Conversations about Israel and Palestine are often challenging, even more so in the aftermath of the most recent war this summer. UWinnipeg’s Global College and the United Centre for Theological Studies are offering a course this winter, Religion, Rights and Relationships in Israel and the West Bank–which includes a trip to the regionto examine these complex conversations.

“The conflict involving Israel and Palestinians has been one of the most enduring struggles of the last 60 years,” notes Dean Peachey, executive director of Global College, and one of the course instructors. “It’s also one of the most difficult issues for Canadians to discuss. This course will be a forum to examine differing viewpoints.”

This course explores contemporary conflict and justice issues in Israeli-Palestinian relations, with particular attention to the perspectives and contributions of the three Abrahamic faith traditions, along with secular narratives. Starting in January, the course will meet weekly on campus before spending two weeks in Israel and the West Bank (including reading week, February 15-28).

This field portion will include guest lectures from various individuals and groups, visits to sites of historical, religious and political significance.

“Having visited Israel and the West Bank last March I can attest to the fact that this offers a new perspective on a conflict that is both complex and confusing for so many of us,” expressed Terry Hidichuck, Executive  Director of the United Centre for Theological Studies.

The course will be available to undergraduate students for Human Rights credit, and to graduate students for Theology credit. The course is also open to a limited number of persons to “audit” with credit.

There will be an information session on the course on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 12:30-1:30pm in 1MS25 (520 Portage Ave), for interested students.

This could be a course of a lifetime. For information and application form visit Religion, Rights, and Relationships in Israel and the West Bank or call 204-988-7105
