Renowned Civil Rights Activist at UWinnipeg

clayborne-carsonWINNIPEG, MB–Widely recognized as a playwright, distinguished scholar on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement, Dr. Clayborne Carson’s role as a public historian embraces several innovative initiatives. Carson will share his insight at a free public lecture entitled Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Global Freedom Struggle at The University of Winnipeg on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 7:00 pm at the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex Atrium (599 Portage Ave.)

Dr. Carson is currently a professor of American History and The Ronnie Lott Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute.  He was chosen by the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King to edit and publish the papers of her late husband Martin Luther King, Jr.

Stanford University historian Dr. Clayborne Carson has devoted most of his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the movements King inspired. A gifted writer and deeply engaging speaker, Dr. Carson’s collected knowledge reflects not only his research on King but also his undergraduate civil rights and antiwar activism, which led him to appreciate the importance of grassroots political activity as well as visionary leadership in the African-American freedom struggle.

Carson has several other events on campus including an address to the UWinnipeg Collegiate Students, and UWinnipeg staff and faculty earlier in the day.

This event is sponsored by the Elizabeth Laird Lecture Series, through UWinnipeg’s Office of the Vice President, Research and International, Department of History the Oral History Centre, the the President  Office, the Ridd Institute and Global College, the Uniter,  Manitoba Institute of African-Canadian Affairs (MIACA), South Asia Studies Forum and Post colonial African and South Asia Studies Group and the Zimangalo Foundation.
