Staff and Faculty to be Honoured at Spring Convocation

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is pleased to honour three outstanding faculty members and one outstanding staff member with special awards at the upcoming Spring Convocation ceremonies on June 11 & 12, 2015.

Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance:

David Fitzpatrick – PhD; MEd; MEd; BEd; Ed. Cert.; BPE

Dr. David Fitzpatrick’s list of accomplishments includes serving on 70 University committees — more than 20 of which he chaired, including the President’s Task Force on Athletics and Academics (2008-2010), which was instrumental in the creation of the new Health & RecPlex as well as the Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health, with Fitzpatrick serving as its first Dean. Fitzpatrick also chairs the Community Access Advisory Committee to ensure community programming remains a vital part of the RecPlex mandate. He is also integral to the renovation of the Duckworth Centre and development of the Great-West Life Healthy Campus and Research Centre, opening up new academic and research opportunities for faculty and students.

Dr. Beverley Fehr has inspired a generation of young scholars with her passion for social psychology, offering lively and engaging courses at The University of Winnipeg for almost 30 years. Fehr weaves story-telling and humour into her lessons and is widely respected as a powerful motivator. Her research specialty is interpersonal relationships, and she has built a network of meaningful relations at UWinnipeg. Fehr’s teaching is infused with kindness, compassion, and deep personal respect, and her generosity of spirit extends to academic opportunities for students: 25 have been named as co-authors on her papers.  Fehr is the Canadian author of Social Psychology, and is routinely called upon to lecture at other universities and at international conferences.

Erica & Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research & Scholarship:

Michael MacKinnon, PhD, MA, BA, BSc

Dr. Michael MacKinnon

Dr. Michael MacKinnon is known for his remarkable productivity and exemplary performance as an internationally-recognized researcher and scholar in the field of zooarchaeology, specializing in the understanding of ancient Mediterranean societies. MacKinnon’s interdisciplinary aptitude for data synthesis paints the richest picture possible and gives context to what he discovers through faunal analysis. MacKinnon has published two monographs, one of which earned him the coveted International Association for Classical Archaeology Publication Prize in 2002, and has authored or co-authored dozens of book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, book reviews, technical reports and peer-reviewed conference poster or paper presentations. He has been invited to tour as an Archaeological Institute of America National Lecturer six times, and has delivered lectures to audiences that range from second-graders to graduate students at Harvard.

Kevin Doyle embodies The University of Winnipeg’s passion for higher learning and personal achievement. As the Supervisor in the Computer Writing Lab for Rhetoric and Communications, he has been offering kindness and patience for more than two decades at UWinnipeg. His students describe him as a benevolent mentor, a saint and a hero. He attends to them with humour and gentle nature that helps encourage their success. Kevin is consistently noted for his professionalism, dedication and compassion, and is generous with his time and knowledge. A recent scholarship winner credited him for her success, noting he went beyond what she thought was possible.
