WINNIPEG, MB – Students and concerned citizens are invited to participate in an Interactive Landmines Workshop on Tue. Nov. 27 from 1:00-3:00 pm, 2M70 (Manitoba Hall) led by Michelle Hassen, The Canadian Red Cross Society Humanitarian Issues Program Coordinator. This event is one of many interactive events taking place at UWinnipeg during the Landmines Action Week from Nov. 26-30.
This workshop will provide basic information on the problem of landmines, including the humanitarian toll and discussing what concerned global citizens can do. During the workshop there will be a guided tour of the Living with Landmines Photo Exhibit by photographer Tony Hauser.
In the evening there will be an expert panel discussion Can It Be Done Again? at 2M70 (Manitoba Hall) from 7:00-8:30 pm. This panel through discussion will investigate the success of the Ottawa Treaty and how civil society, diplomacy and international cooperation can make change in the world and how can we move forward from here.
Hassen resides in Vancouver, BC. She has served with the Mines Arms Unit at International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva where she helped conduct an international communications campaign on the landmine crisis and the progress towards a mine-free world. She also participated in the First Review Conference of the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel mines in Nairobi, aimed at strengthening governments’ commitments to the convention and a plan of action.
Tony Hauser is a photographer that has spent more than 30 years developing his craft. His exhibition Living with Land Mines is a collection of 16 life-size portraits of Cambodian children who have suffered the effects of landmines. The objective of the collection is to confront his audience with the devastating consequences of landmines around the world. This exhibit is touring 14 other university campuses.
