WINNIPEG, MB – Educators and the public are invited to attend a conference devoted to understanding how children learn math. The Art and Science of Math Education conference takes place on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at The University of Winnipeg, Convocation Hall.
The purpose of this conference is to expose educators and the public to a range of views on math education from leading experts in education, cognitive science and Aboriginal education, and to explore ways of bringing the best insights together into practice. Views on how best to proceed sometimes diverge, yet all are founded in a shared desire to give all students an opportunity to engage in, appreciate and achieve high levels of proficiency in mathematics.
This conference will be of particular interest to teachers, school administrators, consultants, policy-makers, educators, parent groups and researchers.
Presentations will be given by local, national and international experts and the event will conclude with a stimulating panel discussion with participant interaction.Speakers and panelists include:
Daniel Ansari, University of Western Ontario, a cognitive neuroscientist whose research aims to understand how children develop basic numerical skills using behavioral as well as functional and structural brain imaging methods. His research was recently featured in the Globe and Mail.
W. Stephen Wilson, Johns Hopkins University, who served as Senior Advisor for Mathematics in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, United States Department of Education.
John Mighton, Officer of the Order of Canada and Founder of JUMP Math, who developed a successful math instruction program which was featured in the New York Times, in April, 2011 and also, more recently, in the Vancouver Sun.
Carole Bilyk, A/Coordinator, Development Unit, Instruction, Curriculum and Assessment Branch, Manitoba Education.
Dawn Sutherland, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Science Education, University of Winnipeg.
Brent Davis, Distinguished Research Chair in Math Education, University of Calgary.
