Slavoj Žižek
UWinnipeg’s Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications presents, “The Elvis of Cultural Theory: Understanding Slavoj Žižek,” on Friday, March 29th, 2019 at 12:30 – 1:30 pm in room 2M70. This lecture is part of the Dialogues speaking series.
UWinnipeg’s Drs. Jane Barter (religion and culture) and Matthew Flisfeder (rhetoric, writing and communications) will be joined by Romani scholar Esther Wolfe to discuss the work of philosopher and cultural theorist Slavoj Žižek.
Žižek will be speaking at UWinnipeg to a sold out crowd on Thursday, April 18, 2019 as the next UWinnipeg’s Axworthy Distinguished Lecturer. This lunch hour event is free and open to the public. All are welcome and encouraged to join the discussion.
Barter is a professor at UWinnipeg whose research interests include gender, Christian and Jewish thought and continental philosophy of religion. She has published two monographs on Christian theology and several articles in the intersection of feminist theory and religion.
Flisfeder is an assistant professor at UWinnipeg. He is the author of The Symbolic, The Sublime, and Slavoj Žižek’s Theory of Film (Palgrave Macmillan 2012), and co-editor of Žižek and Media Studies: A Reader (Palgrave Macmillan 2014).
Wolfe is a nonbinary Romani scholar, artist, teacher and organizer based in Turtle Island. They completed their English Lit BA at Ball State University before completing their Masters at Miami University of Ohio. Wolfe’s work centres on Romani history, particularly Romani slavery in colonial America, and contemporary oppression of Roma in Europe. In their future postgraduate career, they hope to continue on to create a Marxist history of the Romani.
