The Passing of Ruth Miriam (Babs) Asper

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg and The University of Winnipeg Foundation express their deepest sympathies to the family of Ruth Miriam (Babs) Asper, who passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 30.

“Babs Asper was a great citizen of this city and province devoted to philanthropy and giving back to the community,” said UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy.  “Her dedication to human rights education in particular will be immortalized with the opening of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights next year.  Above all, she was deeply committed to her family including her late husband Israel, children David, Gail and Leonard, and her many grandchildren.  We mourn her loss with them today.”

“Mrs. Asper had a dedication to excellence and she lived it,” said, Susan A. Thompson, President & CEO, The University of Winnipeg Foundation. “She inspired all of us by her example.”

Babs Asper was chair and co-founder of the Asper Foundation, a private charitable foundation that supports countless programs and initiatives particularly in human rights, the arts and cultural sectors, including UWinnipeg’s Centre for Theatre & Film.
