The Wesmen are Canada West Champions!

The UWinnipeg men’s volleyball team made history with a dominant win in front of their home crowd

On March 9, the UWinnipeg Wesmen men’s volleyball team defeated the University of Alberta to win the crown of Canada West champions for the first time in University history.

The atmosphere in the sold-out Duckworth Centre was electric as students, faculty, staff, and Wesmen supporters from throughout the city gathered to cheer on their team. This was the first time UWinnipeg had hosted the Final Four tournament, and the team did not disappoint their fans—winning in three straight sets.

The dominant victory was sealed by Kinesiology major and and conference all-star, Isaiah Olfert, and it puts the team in great position entering the national championships March 21 to 23 in Brandon.

“We do a lot of preparation — physical and mental preparation — so it’s just really great to see the guy execute when it matters and I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Wesmen head coach Chris Voth said.  “I have no words. I’m speechless. The guys played amazing. They did everything that I asked for, and more.”

You can learn more about each player on the team by visiting the team’s roster page.

Wesmen fans, get your tickets online in advance, as passes will not be sold on-site. You can also watch the Wesmen’s national championship games live CBC Gem. Seedings and schedule for the tournament will be announced on Wednesday, March 12.
