WINNIPEG, MB – Students, faculty and staff gathered today on the front lawn of UWinnipeg for the 38th Annual Great Rock Climb. Seven teams of three took the challenge to climb to the top of the infamous Rock of Remembrance, a 25-ton granite boulder that rests on the UWinnipeg’s front lawn. This annual test of physical endurance and ingenuity began in 1972.
Reigning Champions
The team to get all three members to the rock’s summit in the fastest time was last year’s reigning champions, The Caravaners. The winning team members are Ian Scott, Drew Hawranick and Alex Edye. The trio secured the Great Rock Climb Trophy for the third time, with 15.19 seconds, beating their last year time of 18.7 seconds. The Caravaners ran down the 50.3 metres from the steps of Wesley Hall to climb to the top of the Great Rock. The record set by a team in 1979 of only 9.8 seconds remains the best time on record.
The top three teams received cash prizes, provided generously by President Emeritus Dr. Henry E. Duckworth family, the founder of the event.
