WINNIPEG, MB – Renowned media critic and creator of the Feminist Frequency, Anita Sarkeesian, is the next Axworthy Distinguished Lecture. Sarkeesian will be speaking on History vs Women: The Defiant Lives that They Don’t Want You to Know on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 7:00 pm in Riddell Hall. This lecture is part of the Series on Social Justice and the Public Good in the Centre for the Liberal Arts and Secular Society (CLASS).

Sarkeesian, who has made the list of Time Magazine’s most influential people in the world, studies how women are reflected in popular culture, especially video games. Sarkeesian’s Feminist Frequency series is well known and available online.

Sarkeesian has been targeted by a coordinated harassment campaign against her, known as Gamergate. Gamergate is an example of many of the struggles women continue to face in the fight for equality. Despite the attacks, Sarkeesian continues to be outspoken. Her work has been viewed millions of times and her videos also serve as educational tools in high school and university classrooms.

“Anita Sarkessian is a leading voice and continues to focus attention to how women are misrepresented in popular culture,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor. “Her courage is an example of leadership that contributes to the advancement of women.”

Later this month, Sarkeesian will release her new book that shares the title of her lecture, co-authored with Ebony Adams, with Feiwel & Friends (MacMillan Publishers). History vs. Women is a collection of 25 stories of extraordinary women, through the ages, who dared to defy history and change the world around them.
