UWinnipeg adds new Indigenous Community Awards

The University of Winnipeg’s Office of Indigenous Engagement, with support from the President’s Office, has established new UW Indigenous Community Awards. These awards were created to acknowledge, uplift, and celebrate the efforts of Indigenous members of the University community.

The awards will recognize inspiring members of our community and thank them for their work as role models, mentors, and leaders who promote Reconciliation and strengthen Indigenous community at the University. Award recipients will be announced in the spring of each year.

“Having experienced the isolation of COVID-19, and studying and working from home for a few years, many are relieved to have returned to campus and have a renewed appreciation for community,” said Dr. Chantal Fiola, Interim Associate Vice-President, Indigenous Engagement. “A strong and vibrant community is a collaborative endeavor. These awards are an opportunity to spotlight Indigenous students, staff, and faculty whose efforts strengthen our community.”

Staff and faculty award

Up to two Indigenous staff members will be honored each year, with one award going to a staff member with less than 10 years of service, and one with more than 10 years of service.

Up to two Indigenous faculty members will be honored each year, with one award going to a faculty member with less than 10 years of service, and one with more than 10 years of service.

Student award

Up to four Indigenous students will receive a $500 award each year: two from undergraduate studies and two from graduate studies. Undergraduate nominees must be registered for full- or part-time studies for the current fall/winter academic year. Graduate nominees must be studying full- or part-time in the current academic year.

Preference will be given to first-time recipients of these awards.

Nominations

Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, faculty, and current students may nominate an eligible Indigenous staff or faculty member or student. Nominations will be reviewed and selected by a committee overseen by the Associate Vice-President, Indigenous Engagement.
