UWinnipeg Appoints Board Chair, Strategic Planning Underway

WINNIPEG–The University of Winnipeg Board of Regents, in a unanimous decision at its Board meeting this evening, appointed Richard Graydon as Chair of the Board.

Acting Chair since September 2002, Graydon brings a wealth of administrative acumen to the Board. Past President of the Principals’ Association, Graydon has served as principal of Luxton, William Whyte, Isaac Brock, Wellington, and John M. King Schools. He has also served as a volunteer with a variety of community organizations, including The Children’s Home of Winnipeg (Past President), the Children’s Aid Society (former board member), and Child & Family Services-Central (Advisory Committee). A native of New Zealand, Graydon, his wife Betty Ann, and their two daughters emigrated to Canada in 1972.

“Richard Graydon is a dedicated Regent. With his experience and commitment, he will thoughtfully guide the Board who, in collaboration with Senate and Administration, is working to strategically address the challenges that are before us,” states Frank Hechter, Chair of the Board’s Nominating Committee.

That strategic process is well underway.

At tonight’s Board meeting, Acting President Patrick Deane, outlined for the Regents an integrated Strategic Planning Process which will govern decisions within the University over the next five years.

“The University has made important strides in stabilizing its situation,” says Deane. “We are now eagerly looking forward to a future founded on sound finances and a bold academic vision.”

At the centre of this process is the University’s Academic Plan. Consultations within the University Community and with other stakeholders have already begun. A discussion paper on academic planning is slated for wide circulation and dialogue in February.
