The University of Winnipeg will be closed Saturday, November 11, in honour of Remembrance Day.
Campus buildings, including the UWinnipeg Library and the Axworthy Health and RecPlex, will be locked. Elements Restaurant will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Winnipeg offers several ways to honour Canada’s veterans on this day.
The city’s largest public Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the RBC Convention Centre at 10:40 a.m. Doors open at 9:30 a.m., and the public is asked to be seated by 10:30 a.m. Smaller ceremonies will be held at various locations throughout the city by branches of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Events and exhibits offer another way to pay your respects.
On Friday, November 10 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) will host a free talk with Devin Beaudry, a Manitoba Métis veteran who had a 35-year career with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The CMHR is also offering free admission for veterans and military personnel November 7-12.
The Combat Service Support Museum, located inside Minto Armouries (969 St. Matthews Avenue), will open Saturday with a special display on Indigenous veterans.
UWinnipeg students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to view the list of ways to remember compiled by Veterans Affairs Canada, including wearing a poppy and pausing for two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. You can also visit the Government of Canada website to learn about the contributions of Indigenous veterans and the numerous challenges they overcame.
