On Friday, students will attempt the Great Rock Climb as part of Homecoming 2011

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is gearing up for its annual Homecoming Weekend 2011 from Thursday, September 8 to Sunday, September 11. Alumni, students, family, and friends of the University are invited to join in the festivities featuring tours, lectures, class reunions, a bocce tournament, and more.

The celebration kicks off at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 8 with tours of the iconic Buhler Centre, one of UWinnipeg’s newest additions to campus. Along with the tours, the Faculty of Business and Division of Continuing Education will be holding an Open House and Barbecue.

Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor will deliver a State of the University Address in Convocation Hall, 2nd floor Wesley Hall at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 9.

Tours and BBQ’s

The rest of the weekend includes tours of the campus, including the newly opened Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex and Wesley Hall, winner of the Doors Open 2011 Award for Best Restoration. There will also be a lecture by The Very Reverend Stan McKay at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 9 with the 140th Anniversary of Theological Education Banquet hosted by the Faculty of Theology that evening (tickets and reservations required).

All are invited to attend the Community Barbecue happening at noon on Saturday, September 10 in the Portage Commons followed by a bocce tournament commencing at 1 p.m. Registration is required and there is a $40 entry fee for a team of four. All proceeds from the tournament will go to The Opportunity Fund.

For those University of Winnipeg alumni celebrating milestone class reunions (Classes of 1951, 1961 and 1971), there will be reunion dinners on Saturday evening at The Fort Garry Hotel. This will be another chance to catch up with old classmates and reminisce about fond memories.

Homecoming Weekend 2011 will end with an Ecumenical Service of Worship in Convocation Hall on Sunday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. and a pancake breakfast in Riddell Hall Cafeteria at 11:30 a.m.
