Dr. David Fitzpatrick, currently Dean of Arts, will become the Acting Dean, Faculty of Kinesiology July 2012
WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is establishing a Faculty of Kinesiology as part its strategy to enhance its athletics and academic strategy following approval by the University’s Senate last month. The Faculty of Kinesiology will formally come into being on July 1, 2012, with Dr. David Fitzpatrick appointed as its acting dean.
Dr. Fitzpatrick is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health, and currently the Dean of Arts. He has taught and conducted research at UWinnipeg since 1990. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, and has the following degrees and certificates from the University of Manitoba: Bachelor of Physical Education, Certificate in Education, Bachelor of Education, Master of Education (Curriculum), Master of Education (Administration), as well as a Special Education Certificate from the Manitoba Department of Education. He has served as Dean of Arts since 2007, and Associate Dean prior to that.
“With today’s announcement of proposed new Fieldhouse and Wellness Centre, this new Faculty will take full advantage of these new facilities to further enhance both UWinnipeg’s academic and athletic excellence,as well as our engagement with the community,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg.
The new Faculty of Kinesiology is another outcome of the President’s Task Force on Athletics and Academics released in 2009, chaired by Dean Fitzpatrick, and will deepen UWinnipeg’s specialization in this emerging field of study, including the areas of Athletic Therapy, Sport Pedagogy, Coaching Education, Inner-City Youth Sport Development, and Healthy Living, Wellness, and Nutrition Awareness.
Dr. Fitzpatrick will remain as Dean of Arts during the 2011 Fall Term, at which time he will begin a transition over to becoming more involved with the new Faculty of Kinesiology and the Field House Initiative, working with faculty and staff over the next year, to prepare for the launch of the Faculty of Kinesiology.
