WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg will participate as an Institutional Partner at the Quebec 2014 International Summit of Cooperatives in October, hosted by the Desjardins Group and the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA). This biennial gathering brings expert leaders from over 100 cooperative and mutualist enterprises together to discuss concerns about current and future business challenges and help advance the cooperative business model worldwide.
“We are delighted that our new Cooperative Enterprise program led by Dr. Claudia Sanchez-Bajo will be featured prominently at this global event’, says Dr. Sylvie Albert, the Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Professional Education. “There is an impressive list of attendees ranging from representatives of supranational organizations, politicians and diplomats, members of cooperatives and mutual associations, academics, and sponsors. These will be fertile grounds for networking and advancing the work of the new cooperative field of studies within our Department of Business and Administration.”
The Summit is an opportunity to forge valuable strategic alliances, stay abreast of major international development trends and gain a solid understanding of the global cooperative movement and the business opportunities it offers.
“Our Cooperative Enterprise program, based in our Faculty of Business, is the only undergraduate program of its kind in North America and is building a discipline in cooperative enterprise,” explained Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor. “Meeting with leaders from around the world at the Desjardins Summit is an excellent opportunity to help expand our knowledge base and make our program even more competitive.”
The University of Winnipeg’s Cooperative Enterprise program is headed by Dr. Sanchez Bajo, who assumed the newly-created position of Chair in Co-operative Enterprises within the university’s Faculty of Business and Economics in August 2013. The position was established to help promote the success of the cooperative sector and foster the development of socially-responsible entrepreneurs. The Chair is supported by contributions of $625,000 over 5 years from a collaborative partnership between the university, the government of Manitoba and members of the cooperative community including Federated Co-operatives Limited, The Co-operators Group, Credit Union Central of Manitoba Limited, Assiniboine Credit Union Limited, Arctic Co-operatives Limited, and Red River Cooperative Ltd.
