WINNIPEG, MB – Barbara Nepinak, respected Elder at The University of Winnipeg, and her husband Clarence Nepinak, were recipients of the Knowledge Keepers Award 2010 at a gala dinner at the Delta Winnipeg on Thursday, November 17, 2010.
Significant Contributions
This award recognizes individuals of Aboriginal descent who have made significant contributions to Aboriginal education throughout their lifetime. Educators with more than ten years of service are considered.The Kaskahtawin Gala Dinner, a Cree word that translates to “it can be done,” was hosted by the University College of the North in partnership with the Advanced Education Training and Literacy Aboriginal Advisory Council.
Nepinak has earned many awards for her work and commitment to the community including the Excellence Award by Inter-Provincial Association on Native Employment, the City of Winnipeg’s Citizenship Mayor’s Award, and the Recognition Award “Honouring Women of Distinction” from the Original Women’s Network. She also has served on many boards including Folklorama, Cultural Human Resources Council (Ottawa), Aboriginal Healthy Network (Vancouver) and as a cultural advisor for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Proceeds of the event go directly to the establishment of a bursary fund for Aboriginal mature students who wish to pursue post-secondary education in Manitoba.
