“It’s wanting to know that makes us matter,” said Hannah Jarvis, in Arcadia.
The University of Winnipeg Department of Theatre and Film presents Tom Stoppard’s radiant and witty Arcadia, directed by faculty member Shelagh Carter. The show runs at the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film from February 12 – 16, 2019.
Within the framework of the highly entertaining romantic sagas of characters both past and present, Arcadia explores a multiplicity of personal, philosophical, and scientific themes, examining the principles of mathematics, literary analysis, historical research, sex, and garden landscape.
“Stoppard has assuredly written alternating scenes between the present day and the early nineteenth century until the sizable wall of the years separating them becomes, as the play progresses, increasingly dissolved,” says Carter. “The play’s structure itself is an algorithm for the randomness, if not chaotic confusion, in which the characters themselves are immersed.”
As a director, Carter has created work for over a decade, receiving prestigious awards such “Best Director” award at the prestigious 2017 Milan Film Festival; a 2007 National Screen Institute Drama Prize; and a 2010 Women In the Director’s Chair Career Advancement Module Award. She is a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio as an actress and director, and a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors Lab in Toronto.
Arcadia is creatively staged in an alleyway configuration, with Set Design by Sean E. McMullen, Costume Design by Lauren Martin, and Lighting Design by department graduate Ksenia Broda-Milian. All technical work is done by senior production students.
Arcadia runs Tuesday, February 12 through Friday, February 15 at 8:00 pm, and Saturday, February 16 at 2:00 pm & 7:00 pm at the The Asper Centre for Theatre and Film (400 Colony Street).
