UWinnipeg honours slain refugee, Abdul Jemei

In memory of Abdul Jemei, The University of Winnipeg Inner-City Wesmen Girl’s Basketball Program will hold a memorial basketball game and set up a scholarship in his memory this Sunday evening, with the support of his family. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Abdul, a refugee from Sudan, was slain last month in a stabbing incident downtown. Three of his sisters, Hana, Sabrinia and Esra are members of the girls’ basketball program. Abdul actively supported the program and team members want to show their support for his family and create a post-secondary scholarship in his memory.

Abdul immigrated to Winnipeg with his family four years ago. He had started down a path of success, returning to school and taking on a full-time restaurant job. UWinnipeg is saddened by this tragic loss and determined to continue working with inner-city youth to provide healthy and safe opportunities.

UWinnipeg’s Inner City Wesmen Girl’s Team is comprised of 50 young women between the ages of 13 to 18, mainly from the inner-city.

Donations in support of the scholarship will be accepted at the memorial game or by contacting Program Director Bob Axworthy directly.
