The University of Winnipeg signed a Memorandum of Understanding March 29 with the prestigious Canada-US Fulbright Program, strengthening the University’s focus on internationalization and opening up opportunities for UWinnipeg students and faculty to lecture, research and pursue graduate studies in the United States, and for Americans to do the same at UWinnipeg.
“The University of Winnipeg is a city university with plans for growth. There’s a lot of tradition here, and a lot of vision. It’s a good fit with the Fulbright Program,” said Dr. Michael Hawes, Executive Director of the Canada-US Fulbright Program, administered by the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the USA.
“We are honoured to be invited to partner with the premier scholarly and research program in North America,” said UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. “Building on our traditions in excellence in Environmental Studies and Science with the new Richardson College for the Environment, the Fulbright Program will enable our students and faculty members to engage in academic programs and collaborative research in the US in this area and many other disciplines.”
The mandate of the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program is to enhance mutual understanding between the people of Canada and the people of the United States by providing support to outstanding students, faculty, professionals and independent researchers.
“My role is to encourage deeper and more nuanced understanding of Canada, and the United States, through reciprocal academic exchanges,” said Hawes. “Our goal is to engage students and faculty and enable them to share ideas and make their research accessible to relevant publics in both countries and participate more fully in various national and bi-national debates.”
The Canada-US Fulbright program is centred on study of Canada-US relations, trade, integration, public policy, urban and regional planning, communications, culture, environmental policy, indigenous issues, law and economics. Students and faculty members across a broad range of disciplines can participate in Fulbright.
The bi-national Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program is supported by the Government of Canada, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, the Government of the United States, through the Department of State, and a large number of public and private sector partners.
