The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce the newly expanded Distinguished Alumni Awards. The awards will now honour three well-deserving alumni in the following categories: Outstanding Achievement, Community Impact, and One to Watch.  These categories will recognize alumni members whose high standard of personal and professional excellence provides an inspiration to UWinnipeg alumni and future graduates.

Since 1990, the UWinnipeg Alumni Council has been recognizing alumni for outstanding contributions to their professions or communities. In the past, the recipients of the Alumni Association’s highest honour have been acknowledged during the spring and fall convocations. With the expanded program, recipients will now be celebrated during a special event held in October 2025 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

“These new awards are an opportunity to highlight some of the many inspiring UWinnipeg alumni who are strengthening communities in Manitoba and around the world,” said Dr. Todd Mondor, President and Vice-Chancellor. “Alumni are an important part of our UWinnipeg community, and we are pleased to celebrate their achievements. As a UWinnipeg graduate myself, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with other alumni at the awards event in October.”

UWinnipeg has more than 61,000 alumni. This community dates back 145 years and includes graduates of The University of Winnipeg founding colleges: Manitoba College (1871), Wesley College (1888), and United College (1938).

Past recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award have included Tina Keeper (BA 07, O.M.), Dr. Frank Albo (BA 02), and Guy Maddin (BA 78).

With the expansion of the awards program, we are looking to our community to provide nominations for each of the three awards. “We have so many great alumni making a difference in their communities,” said Brent Corrigan (BA 74), President of the UWinnipeg Alumni Council. “These new awards will not only recognize the outstanding achievements of UWinnipeg graduates but also provide all alumni with the opportunity to recognize their peers and to join with the University in celebrating these alumni.”

Nominations are now being accepted for the Distinguished Alumni Awards. This period will end June 15 and will be followed by a selection period and the announcement of the winners.

Graduates of The University of Winnipeg, The University of Winnipeg Collegiate, United College, Wesley College, and Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (formerly The University of Winnipeg Division of Continuing Education) diploma or certificate programs are considered alumni, and therefore eligible for this award.
