The University of Winnipeg Library has announced the opening of the new Borealis Research Data Repository. This resource will allow UWinnipeg researchers to share their research outputs with scholars across the globe, enhancing visibility that can lead to securing future funding.
The project to integrate this resource into the Library was led by Jamie Orr, Research Data Management Librarian, who saw a need to be among one of the 50 Canadian post-secondary institutions to have their own local instances of Borealis.
“The Borealis team at Scholars Portal is dedicated to research data accessibility, discovery, and supports UWinnipeg and our researchers as we tailor Borealis to fit our own unique research data needs,” said Sarah Giesbrecht, acting Research Data Management Librarian.
The UWinnipeg Research Office, which partnered with the Library in this endeavour, shares its excitement about the impact it will have for UWinnipeg researchers.
“This national data repository will go a long way to ensuring that researchers at the University of Winnipeg can meet data management and storage requirements coming from various funders,” said Lauren Bosc, Lead Program Officer, Research Partnerships. “In the practical sense, it is incredibly important to provide a resource to researchers that will allow for long-term data archiving in a way we haven’t been able to offer before, and to do so in a way that is secure, preserves research data long term, and makes research more visible and accessible.”
In addition to Borealis, the UWinnipeg Library hosts scholarly publications – through platforms like WinnSpace and Open Journal Systems – that complement this new data repository, providing the highest level of resources to researchers in our community.
