The University of Winnipeg will lower campus flags to half-mast on January 27 in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
This is a day to pause and remember the six million Jewish people killed in the Holocaust, and the countless others who suffered persecution. It is also a day to honour survivors and to support educators and advocates working to instill the lessons of history.
We owe it to Holocaust victims and survivors to reflect on the root causes of this atrocity. As a UWinnipeg community, we reaffirm our shared commitment to countering racism and hatred in all their forms, including antisemitism, and to fostering an inclusive and respectful campus environment for everyone.
“It’s important to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, especially in these times,” said Dr. Jody Perrun, who teaches courses on the Holocaust at UWinnipeg. “Antisemitism has increased in Canada and abroad, including shootings and vandalism, and many Canadians seem unaware that antisemitism is on the rise.”
UWinnipeg community members are encouraged to attend a local event to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
On Monday, January 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR), in partnership with the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada, will host “Hate goes viral,” an event to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Admission is free, but registration is required. More information on the event is available on the CMHR website.
