WINNIPEG, MB – Yesterday, Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau announced a $15,000 grant for UWinnipeg’s Sustainable Transportation Hub & Bike Station (HUB). This money will go towards the architectural concept and development of this eco-friendly transportation HUB.
“This generous grant is great for The University of Winnipeg,” says Mark Burch, Director of the Campus Sustainability Office. “This takes us a step closer to our sustainable transportation plan for the University and will contribute to the Province’s and UWinnipeg’s commitment to sustainability and action on climate change.”
The ‘HUB’ will provide public transit users, cyclists and pedestrians a central point of contact and information, waiting areas, secure bicycle storage, lockers and repair facilities. The HUB will also provide secure parking for bicycle users, as well as amenities for walkers, the campus and the greater community. This initiative is a product of UWinnipeg’s Transportation Working Group of the Campus Sustainability Council.
The grant is part of the Government of Manitoba’s Climate Change Action Plan to help Manitoba meet its climate change commitments. This plan was developed with significant community and business input including University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Axworthy who chaired the 2001 provincial government Climate Change Task Force.
