UWinnipeg Professor to Lead Winnipeg 1919 General Strike Tour

WINNIPEG, MB – For six weeks in 1919, Winnipeg was held in the grip of The Winnipeg General Strike. On May 6, 2008, Dr. Nolan Reilly, Chair of The Department of History at The University of Winnipeg, will lead a seminar, film and guided bus tour dedicated to the strike. Sites on the tour will include the CPR Station on Higgins Avenue; the Ukrainian Labour Temple; Portage and Main: the site of “Bloody Saturday”; plus neighbourhoods in the North End (and South End if time permits).

The event will give participants an understanding of the strike in its historical context, knowledge of the resulting changes to Canada’s economic and social landscape, and a better understanding of how the strike continues to impact Canadians today and will do so into the future.

Professor Reilly, a nationally known expert in labour history, has led the tour for the past five years for hundreds of people and has a keen interest in making the presentation of history accessible and interesting to everyone. The event information is as follows:

4:30 p.m. – Reception and light dinner
5:00 p.m. – Film presentation
6:00 p.m. – Guided bus tour
9:30 p.m. – Return to The University of Winnipeg
Location: Room 2D12, The Duckworth Centre at The University of Winnipeg
