Survey puts UWinnipeg among Canada’s best for Environmental Commitment, Diversity, Small Class Sizes and Healthy Campus Food
WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg continues to be one of Canada’s top undergraduate universities, most notably in the areas of environmental sustainability, small class sizes, diversity and healthy food on campus, according to today’s Globe & Mail Canadian University Report 2013. For the second year, Globe researchers asked six “personality questions” and UWinnipeg students ranked their school first in Western Canada and seventh among all 58 universities in Canada for diversity.
The University of Winnipeg received an A for:
*Environmental Commitment and
*Class Size
The University of Winnipeg received an A- in the following categories:
*Quality of teaching and learning
*Satisfaction with personal safety and security on campus
*Subject matter being taught in courses is interesting
*Development/improvement of oral communication skills
Students gave UWinnipeg a B+ in the category of “Healthy Food on Campus”, first out of 18 universities in Western Canada and tied for second place in all of Canada. In June, 2009, UWinnipeg introduced a new concept in campus dining called Diversity Food Services with a focus on nutritious, fairly-priced and ethnically diverse food options. Wherever possible, the award-winning Diversity Foods uses locally sourced foods, organic ingredients, and has a commitment to fair-trade practices.
Students in the Globe and Mail survey were also asked 14 “personality” questions including:
“Does your university have a diverse student body?” UWinnipeg scored first in Western Canada and 7th overall in Canada on this question.
“It is interesting to see how our students experience their time with us. They consistently rank our faculty and small class sizes in the top on the country – and just as importantly, The University of Winnipeg ethos extends beyond the classroom,” said UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. “What our students also tell us they value is our diverse mix of people and a healthy, green campus, with nutritious food options. These are the shared ideals that shape the very unique spirit of UWinnipeg.”
“UWinnipeg provided me with the extra supports and encouragement needed to succeed in my first year.Through the guidance of the peer mentors and Aboriginal Student Services Centre staff, I have felt a sense of belonging within the University community,” said Shauna Fontaine, 4th year student, History & Indigenous Studies.
