Two University of Winnipeg students have been accepted into the inaugural President’s Student Leadership Program.
Introduced this past January, the program is a unique and immersive learning opportunity that’s bringing together 27 students from various disciplines and institutions to build their leadership potential. It runs from June 8 – 16.
Representing UWinnipeg this summer are Marie-Josée Nadeau (Master of Science in Bioscience, Technology, and Public Policy) and Ian Dimopoulos (Bachelor of Education).
“Marie-Josée Nadeau exhibits exceptional leadership skills and a strong sense of community,” said Dr. Renée Douville, associate professor of biology. “A strong motivation to help others live more fulfilling lives is evident by her team approach towards biomedical research at UWinnipeg and her efforts in community outreach.”
UWinnipeg faculty member Michael Lukie called Dimopoulos an “outstanding and exceptional student.” Lukie taught Dimopoulos in his Theory of Science Teaching class in which he received a final grade of 99.4%.
Applicants of the program were from various faculties at UWinnipeg, the University of Manitoba, Red River College, and University College of the North.
Candidates were selected based on their leadership experience and impact to date, whether formally or informally, as articulated by them, as well as two testimonials from professors, supervisors, elders, bosses, or mentors.
Major program themes include:
- the power of collaboration for leaders and leadership;
- the role of leaders and leadership in social change;
- ethics of leadership; and
- challenges of leading in critical sectors of our economy and society.
The nine-day program will utilize site visits, hands-on workshops, and peer learning to help students gain a broad perspective on leadership and build skills to help in their future careers.
