WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg welcomes the appointment of the Honourable Erin Selby as Manitoba’s new Minister of Advanced Education & Literacy. Premier Greg Selinger appointed her to the post this morning.
Commitment to Community
“We welcome Minister Selby to her new post and look forward to working with her to address the needs and challenges of delivering high-quality post-secondary education in Manitoba,” said UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy. “Her background in media and commitment to community service will serve her well in this new role.”
Selby follows Diane McGifford in the role of Manitoba’s Advanced Education Minister. Earlier this year, McGifford announced that she would not be running in this year’s provincial election. A proud UWinnipeg alumna (BA ’70) and former faculty member, McGifford is the longest-serving education minister in the country and has for the last two years served as Chair of the Council for Ministers of Education, Canada.
“Minister McGifford has served in Cabinet with great distinction, especially during the past seven years as Minister of Advanced Education,” said Axworthy. “She has consistently demonstrated great support for and dedication to the University of Winnipeg, and post-secondary education in the province. We wish her the very best as she moves on to post-political life.”
