UWinnipeg’s 8th Annual Student Film Festival runs April 21-23

WINNIPEG, MB – Our city will once again host promising college and university student filmmakers as at The University of Winnipeg’s 8th Annual Student Film Festival, sponsored by UWinnipeg’s Department of Theatre and Film

The film festival features screenings of post-secondary student films, a seminar on new film technology, the premiere of a Winnipeg senior class project, and a presentation and Q & A session with filmmaker Michael Maryniuk. It also provides the chance to see, for the first time, exciting works by hot new filmmakers working in a variety of genres with unparalleled passion and innovation.

Admission is free and all events are open to the public.

This year we will screen more than 30 student-made films selected from an exciting field of 91entries. They will compete for cash awards in the categories of Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Documentary, Best Editing, Best Screenplay, Best Sound, and Best Film. The Awards Jury will be comprised of local professionals, and audience members will have their say as they vote for Audience Favourite.

Screenings:

Wednesday, April 21st and Thursday, April 22nd

7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Special Panasonic Workshop:

Friday, April 23rd, 11:00 am – 2:30 pm, Room 0T10

This year, for the first time, the Festival will feature a Seminar presented by Panasonic demonstrating ground-breaking new film technology.

Gala Evening:

Friday, April 23rd, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

  • Premiere of Cloud City a new film written by Matthew Kennedy and produced by senior UWinnipeg filmmaking students
  • Special guest, filmmaker Michael Maryniuk will discuss his work, show clips, and host a Q & A session
  • Awards Presentation and Screening of the Festival’s award-winning films
  • Closing reception

All events will take place at The University of Winnipeg in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall (3rd Floor, Centennial Hall), 515 Portage Avenue (with the exception of the Panasonic Workshop which will be held in the Canwest Centre for Theatre and Film, 400 Colony Street; pre-registration is required. Sponsors for this year’s Festival include UWinnipeg’s Office of the Vice-President (Academic) and William F. White International, Inc., provider of motion picture, television and theatrical production equipment, who will present the winner of the Best Film Award with a gift certificate valued at $1,000.00 worth of equipment from William F. White.
