UWinnipeg’s own Patty Wiens will launch her new book, That’ll Never Work Here, Book 2 of The City Project series (Great Plains Press) at McNally Robinson on November 8 at 7 p.m. The launch will include a Q&A, book signing, and a chance to participate in a trivia game, “Who said it? A cyclist or Taylor Swift?”
Wiens, Executive Assistant to the Vice-President of Finance and Administration, is a year-round cyclist and enthusiastic bike advocate with a growing following on YouTube, where she shares scenic pathways, gear tips, and helpful advice for beginners. In her rising podcast, That’s Her Problem!, she sits down with women from across the globe to uncover how they are turning personal conviction into community change.
After 32 years of living in Winnipeg and, like most Winnipeggers, relying on her personal vehicle to get around, the Brazilian-Canadian took a fateful bike ride one winter day. After that experience, Patty embraced cycling year-round, uncovering a wealth of unexpected benefits.
“I was riding my bike so much that I really didn’t want to get back into my car,” she said.
Inspired by these experiences, she is a passionate advocate for safer streets and more transportation options for everyone. And before she knew it, she was named her city’s first Bicycle Mayor.
Patty dreams of using active transportation as a tool to make Winnipeg a more equitable and safer city for all. With her global experience and open mind, she challenges the idea that what works elsewhere in the world could never work here.
Patty is Winnipeg’s First Bicycle Mayor, and a board director and newsletter editor for Bike Winnipeg. She is a passionate advocate for safe streets and spends much of her time promoting year-round cycling on her YouTube channel, Instagram, and her website. She has been featured on YouTube channels and podcasts including The War on Cars, Active Towns, Radio-Free Urbanism, and Tom Babin’s Shifter. She was also named one of Ace Burpee’s Top 100 Most Fascinating Manitobans of 2024.
That’ll Never Work Here is part of The City Project, a series edited by Emma and Michel Durand-Wood.
