WINNIPEG, MB–Dr. Charles Wong, University of Winnipeg’s Canada Research Chair in Ecotoxicology, has been appointed Jinan University Chair Professor at the School of Environment of Jinan University, Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
This endowed three-year visiting professorship, which begins November 2016, is designed to attract outstanding researchers with an international reputation to share their expertise with students and staff at one of China’s foremost post-secondary institutions, and to foster international collaboration and exchange between Jinan and the Chairholder’s home institution, The University of Winnipeg.
“We are looking forward to having Dr. Wong’s experience as we tackle the many environmental problems both in China and around the world,” said Dr. Eddy Y. Zeng, Dean of Jinan University’s School of Environment.

Dr. Wong’s research aims to understand the fate and effects of environmental contaminants in diverse settings, ranging from wastewater-impacted waters to the home environment. He has over 80 peer-reviewed publications to date, and has helped to raise over $10.2 million in external research funding since joining UWinnipeg in 2008. He holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Environmental Toxicology at UWinnipeg, and holds concurrent academic appointments at the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba, and the University of Manitoba in the Department of Environment & Geography and the Department of Chemistry. In addition, Dr. Wong is an Associate Editor of the international journal Environmental Pollution, in the top 10% of all peer-reviewed scientific journals in the environmental sciences (ISI Impact Factor 4.839). At Jinan, Dr. Wong will supervise students and conduct research into the behavior and risks of environmental contaminants in China, and to link these with his research efforts here at home in Canada.
