Visiting Scholar Adds Human Rights Expertise At Global College

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg announced today that alum and former head of the Manitoba Human Right Commission Dianna Scarth will join Global College as Visiting Scholar in Residence from September 2012 to April 2013.During this time she will teach “Human Rights: Local to Global,” which runs over the fall and winter terms, Monday and Wednesday. There is no prerequisite for students interested in taking this course. Scarth will also be available to consult with students on career options in the human rights field, serve as a guest lecturer in classes, and provide input on human rights curriculum development.

“I am very happy to be able to stay involved in human rights work and I am looking forward to undertaking new challenges with the Global College,” said Scarth.

Global College is an action-oriented, multi-disciplinary forum for Canadian and international students bringing students and community members into contact with local faculty, visiting scholars, local leaders and notable speakers from around the world to discover their role within the local and global community, our responsibility to protect and responsibility to act.

BIOGRAPHY

Dianna Scarth is Executive Director of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, until her retirement in September 2012. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Winnipeg, and Master of Social Work and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of Manitoba. She was called to the bar in Manitoba in 1984.

She became Executive Director of the Manitoba Human Rights Commission in 1996. Scarth has served on the executive of the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies. In 2008 she received the Manitoba Government’s Service Excellence Award for Leadership. She is currently a Board Advisor with the Winnipeg Legal Help Centre, which is located on UWinnipeg’s campus.
