Wesmen JoAnne Wells Named Player of the Year

University of Winnipeg Wesmen JoAnne Wells captured the Nan Copp Award at the March 10 banquet preceding the championships, recognizing the fifth-year veteran as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport femaled basketball “Player of the Year.”
Wells, a 22-year-old, 6-foot guard from Bedford, N.S. becomes the second Wesmen to receive the Nan Copp Award as CIS player of year, after standout Sandra Carroll who claimed the honour at the end of three consecutive seasons from 1992-93 to 1994-95. The fifth-year arts student led the CIS in scoring this season with an average of 24.3 points per game, and was also tops in the country with a 90.6 free-throw shooting percentage, which set a new single-season team record. Her 54.6 field goal percentage placed her fourth in the Canada West conference. The team co-captain was the heart and soul of the Wesmen as they claimed the Canada West Great plains regular season title
with a 17-3 record.

Wells, who was also selected to the first All-Canadian team for a third consecutive season, moved into fourth place on the Wesmen all-time career scoring list in 2004-05 with 3082 points, and enters the CIS championship 12 points behind current head coach and former Wesmen great Tanya McKay and Erin Soroko for sole possession of third place. Off the court Wells has been named an Academic All-Canadian in each her five years at the University of Winnipeg.
