Wesmen men’s volleyball team in playoffs after record season

The Winnipeg Wesmen men’s volleyball team is one series win away from hosting the Canada West Final Four for the first time in school history.

The Wesmen will host the Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three quarter-final series at the Duckworth Centre that will start Thursday. Match 2 will go Friday and a third match, if necessary, will be played Saturday. Each match starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at Wesmen.ca/tickets.

The team finished off its finest conference season in nearly 30 years, outlasting the UBCO Heat in Canada West action on February 15 at the Duckworth Centre.

The win gave the Wesmen a 17-3 record in Chris Voth’s first season as head coach, marking the program’s best win percentage since going 16-2 in the 1997-98 season. Since the Canada West changed to a one-division format in 2002, it is the first time the Wesmen have finished first in the standings.

Wesmen women’s volleyball team scores big in playoffs

The Wesmen women’s volleyball team outlasted the Calgary Dinos in five sets on Feb. 20 to earn a leg up in their best-of-three Canada West conference play-in series. They also won the opening round of the Canada West women’s volleyball playoffs and will be moving on to the next stage.

“Both nights we served really well and tonight we did the same thing as last night. We put them out of system a lot, which really helps our blocking scheme,” said Wesmen head coach Phil Hudson, whose team had seven total blocks. “We attacked the ball with a lot of variety. We got more offence out of our middle players compared to yesterday because we serve-received better and I thought our blocking was better.”

Winnipeg’s best-of-three series against the Pandas will start Thursday with Match 2 on Friday and Match 3, if necessary, Saturday. Each match will start at 7 p.m. central time and can be viewed live on Canada West TV
