Twelve teams came out to “conquer the rock” today at The University of Winnipeg. While all completed the challenge — officially known as the annual UWinnipeg Duckworth Great Rock Climb — only one came away with the trophy, presented to the group that scales the 25-ton granite boulder in the shortest time span.
This year, the hardware was presented to three members of UWinnipeg’s Wesmen wrestling team, a trio who managed to perform the feat in just 33 seconds. Other teams completed the race — which starts on the front steps of Wesley Hall and finishes when all three participants have reached the top of the giant rock — in times ranging from 36 to 117 seconds.
The best time ever achieved in the 41-year history of this UWinnipeg tradition is 9.4 seconds.
Staged during the University of Winnipeg Student Association’s O-week activities, the 2012 rock climb participants were cheered on by a crowd of students, faculty, staff, and community members on the campus front lawn.
