West Central Streets Digital Archive Now Online

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg Archives is pleased to announce an exciting digital initiative: the West Central Streets Digital Archive. West Central Streets was a local newspaper founded in 1995 by a group of committed residents of the West Central neighborhood. The goal of the paper was to foster a sense of community pride and strength by telling the unique stories of everyday people dealing with the significant and varied challenges of residential life in that area of the inner city. The first issue of West Central Streets was published in October of 1995 and the paper ran for the following fifteen years.

In early 2011, due to changes in funding structure and weakened capacity, a decision was taken to shut down West Central Streets. The last issue was published in January 2011. Shortly after the paper’s dissolution, the West Central Streets Publishing Committee, headed by one of its founders, Erika Wiebe, agreed to partner with The University of Winnipeg Archives to allow the paper to serve as a pilot project for the Archives developing digitization program. UWinnipeg Archives is now proud to make this invaluable historical resource available to the community.
