The Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre welcomed 56 students to their annual Indigenous Summer STEAM Camps during the final two weeks of July.
The separate one-week camps, which took place on The University of Winnipeg campus, saw students heading into Grades 1 – 6 this fall participate in activities that combined Indigenous knowledge and/or teachings with other departments at the University, such as physics, computer science, and chemistry.
“STEAM camp is about providing opportunities, exposure to different areas of science, connection to one other, and, most importantly, for the kids to have fun,” said Angeline Nelson, Director of Community Learning and Engagement. “Talking with the kids and looking back through the photos, you can see how much they enjoyed themselves.”
Indigenous knowledge keepers shared traditional knowledge about many topics, including sustainability, lodge building, creation stories, traditional games, water storage, and more. Activities also included math lessons, 3D printing, minecraft coding, dry ice with Dr. Russell Mammei, a freeze-frame animation workshop, pH testing, and dissections.
