Winnipeg is about to get more literary — and righteous. Over 230 academics from around the world are expected to arrive in Winnipeg for a major conference NASSR 2015: Romanticism & Rights from August 13-16, 2015 at the  Hotel Fort Garry. This conference, organized by the University of Manitoba’s Michelle Faubert and the University of Winnipeg’s Peter Melville, will explore topics that include sexual rights, the right to religion, the right to die, animal rights, and human rights in literature from the Romantic period (1780-1830). The conference is the 23rd annual gathering of the largest association of scholars of the Romantic period  in the world.

“We’re excited to bring the NASSR conference to Winnipeg this year,” said  Melville, Associate Professor of English, University of Winnipeg.“It’s the largest conference of its kind in the world and will feature literary scholars and cultural theorists from all over North American and Europe who will share their research and thoughts on human (and non-human) rights during the historical period in which modern rights discourses were effectively born.  In addition to hosting over 200 speakers over four days, we have two prominent keynote addresses by leading scholars Joel Falflak of Western University and Nancy Yousef of CUNY-Baruch, as well as a special four-person expert panel on Aboriginal rights that is free and open to the public.”

The Aboriginal rights panel takes place on Friday, August 14 at 4:45 p.m. in the hotel’s Concert Hall on the 7th floor.  ASL services will be provided, thanks to UWinnipeg’s Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies. Scholars will talk about the notion of Indigenous rights, spanning the late eighteenth century to the present day.
