Youth dialogue with mayoral candidates

Is Winnipeg a Human Rights City?

WINNIPEG, MB – On Monday UWinnipeg’s Global College Student Advisory Council and the University of Winnipeg Students Association bring a new angle to the mayoral race by co-presenting the public forum: The Youth Dialogue with Mayoral Candidates Is Winnipeg a Human Rights City?

UW students, concerned about the low voter turnout among youth, have invited the four Mayoral candidates, including front-runners Mayor Sam Katz and Judy Wasylycia-Leis, to engage in direct dialogue with youth on their vision for making Winnipeg a “human rights city”, on Monday, September 27 from 6:307:30 pm in The University of Winnipeg‘s Convocation Hall, located on the second floor of Wesley Hall, 515 Portage Avenue.

UWSA President Jason Syvixay said, “Candidates need to hear from the `next generation’ of Winnipeg citizens. Most post-secondary students have the vote and they care deeply about Winnipeg being a democratic city that delivers on human rights in ways that change lives. The sooner and younger we start, the better it will be for the whole city.”

The Youth Mayoral Dialogue will address tough issues of human rights through questions posed by diverse youth leaders on the youth employment crisis in Winnipeg and the role of gangs, racial discrimination that blocks access to education and services, a safer city with safer homes for vulnerable children and youth.

WHAT: Mayoral Youth Dialogue Youth on Winnipeg as a Human Rights City

WHEN: Monday, September 27 from 6:30pm – 7:30pm

WHERE: University of Winnipeg Convocation Hall –

2nd floor of Wesley Hall – 515 Portage Avenue

“Many youth see the Canadian Museum for Human Rights coming to Winnipeg as positive and exciting, but we need to hear from our municipal leaders on how they can instill a sense of ownership of human rights as a way of life in our city over the next four years,” said Alisa Birnie, student co-chair of the Global College Student Advisory Council at The University of Winnipeg.

“Youth deserve their chance to hear the candidates go on the record with the actions they will take for the realization of human rights in this city, so that all its inhabitants: women, men, youth and children can actually live their rights” said Alex Garcia, student co-chair of the Global College Student Advisory Council. “As young leaders and voters, we want in on the discussion.”

Each candidate will be given the opportunity to speak for five to seven minutes, followed by questions from youth and an open discussion, moderated by student leaders. The event is presented by The University of Winnipeg Global College, and The University of Winnipeg Students Association.
