International Sustainability Leader – Free Public Lecture

WINNIPEG – The public is invited to attend a talk by Leith Sharp, entitled Sustainability: Who are the Change Makers? Through her extensive experience, Sharp shares valuable insights about building sustainability. She will discuss how we can accelerate the transformation necessary for driving sustainability in institutions, and how institutions enable or resist change. Attendees can expect to broaden their understanding of these change processes, as well as the actions needed in the short to long term, on the scale of both the individual and the larger organization.

She offers a unique, human perspective about the work involved in real change” explains Alana Lajoie-O’Malley, Manager of UWinnipeg’s Campus Sustainability Office. “We are very excited to be hosting her talk. This is a great opportunity for our campus and for anyone in Winnipeg to learn about what is required for the transition towards real sustainability.”

BACKGROUND-  About Leith Sharp

Sharp has spent 20 years working to drive sustainability into the core business of the higher education sector. She began her career by establishing one of world’s first campus sustainability programs at the University of New South Wales, Australia. In 1999, Harvard University recruited Sharp as founding director of Harvard’s Office for Sustainability. Under her leadership, Harvard came to have the largest green campus organization in the world, becoming a recognized global leader in campus sustainability. In 2009, Sharp was recruited to be the start-up executive director for the Illinois Green Economy Network, a partnership of 48 community colleges working together to drive green economic growth across Illinois. She is currently the founding chair of the Sustainable Futures Academy, an international collaboration between developing and developed countries. Sharp has published numerous articles, papers, and book chapters, and has taught change management for sustainability at Harvard for the last nine years.

This event is organized by the Campus Sustainability Office at the University of Winnipeg. The Sustainability Initiative is a collaborative effort between students, faculty, and staff that aims to make the University of Winnipeg more environmentally and socially responsible in its physical operations, its governance, and its academic life. The University of Winnipeg aims to become a campus that acts upon its local and global responsibilities to protect and enhance the health and well being of humans and ecosystems.
