WINNIPEG, MB – Today, The Government of Canada announced a major investment in the Canada Research Chairs Program at UWinnipeg with the appointment of Dr. Evelyn Peters, Canada Research Chair in Inner-City Issues, Community Learning, and Engagement and renewing Dr. Mavis Reimer, Canada Research Chair in Young People’s Texts and Cultures. These appointments enable UWinnipeg to strengthen its position as a world leader in university research and development.

Canada Research Chair in Inner-City Issues, Community Learning, and Engagement
Dr. Peters is receiving a Tier I award, which is over a seven-year term at $200,000 / year. She joined the Department of Geography at UWinnipeg in September 2010, coming from the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Saskatchewan, where she was a Tier II Canada Research Chair. Dr. Peters will be working closely with the Institute of Urban Studies. She will be opening the new Centre for Inner-City Research, Community Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) that will be housed on the third floor of the brand new Science Complex, which is scheduled to open in 2011.
Canada Research Chair in Young People’s Texts and Cultures
Dr. Mavis Reimer, Canada Research Chair in Young People’s Texts and Cultures. Dr. Reimer is receiving a renewal of her current Tier II award, which is over a five-year term at $100,000 / year Dr. Reimer’s space is the Centre for Research in Young People’s Texts and Cultures, third floor of Centennial Hall. In her first five-year term, Dr. Reimer was very successful in expanding this area of research, bringing world-renowned visiting scholars to the University and making UWinnipeg an internationally recognized institution for this research field. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Masters in English with a Focus in Culture Studies program.
The University of Winnipeg has four other prestigious Canada Research Chairs: Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Peoples and Histories, Canada Research Chair in Dendrochronology, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Toxicology, and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Science Education. Former Canada Research Chairs include the Canada Research Chair in Urban Change and Adaptation. Each Chair greatly contributes to the academic landscape in research within Canada and beyond, and which directly benefits the students and the institution.
