Dr. Jino Distasio appointed Interim President and Vice-Chancellor

A respected leader within the UWinnipeg community, Dr. Jino Distasio brings deep experience in post-secondary administration, meaningful community engagement, and collaborative approaches to supporting students, faculty and staff.

The University of Winnipeg Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Jino Distasio as Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, effective December 12, 2025.

Dr. Distasio will guide the University while the Board undertakes a comprehensive search for a permanent President and Vice-Chancellor.

A respected leader within the UWinnipeg community, Dr. Distasio brings deep experience in post-secondary administration, meaningful community engagement, and collaborative approaches to supporting students, faculty and staff.

In addition to teaching and supervising students for 25 years, Dr. Distasio’s administrative commitment to the University of Winnipeg spans two decades. This includes more than 10 years as Vice-President, Research and Innovation, in which his leadership supported tremendous growth in research activity and the Canada Research Chair program. He also recently led in the roles of Acting Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Acting Dean of Science and Kinesiology.

Dr. Distasio is widely known for his energy and passion for community engagement. He has served on many local and national committees and boards within the community development sector, and he is a leading voice—both locally and nationally—on a variety of topics such as urban policy, poverty, transportation, and inner city renewal.

“The Board is grateful to Dr. Jino Distasio for stepping into this role during this important time of transition,” said Michelle Pereira, Chair of the Board of Regents.  “His experience and steady leadership will help ensure the University continues moving forward with confidence.”

The University will soon initiate the search process for a permanent president. More information about the process will be shared in the new year.
