Board of Regents Re-Appoints Lloyd Axworthy As President

UWinnipeg President & Vice-Chancellor given mandate through 2014.

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg’s Board of Regents last night approved the re-appointment of Dr. Lloyd Axworthy as President for a five-year term ending March 31, 2014. Axworthy’s present appointment continues through to the end of March 2009.

The Board formed an advisory committee earlier this year to consider the ongoing mandate of the President and, after a thorough review, recommended to the Board Axworthy’s re-appointment. The Board voted unanimously for the re-appointment.

“Lloyd’s performance in accordance with the directed mandate of the Board has been truly remarkable,” said Rev. Dr. Terry Hidichuk, Chairperson of the Board of Regents. “We are excited about his re-appointment and we look forward to the University’s continued growth and development under his leadership.”

The President’s mandate as directed by the Board is:

  • Completing Board-approved initiatives begun under the previous mandate
  • Reinforcing teaching as a primary function of a liberal arts university, including graduate programs and continuing education
  • Acquiring and retaining financial and human resources sufficient to meet the needs of the University
  • Maintaining and enhancing consultative processes within the University community
  • Maintaining and enhancing consultative, cooperative and collaborative relationships with communities external to the University, continuing to uphold its responsibilities to the community and neighbourhood in which it is situated
