The University of Winnipeg community mourns the loss of The Honourable Jim Carr, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, who passed away at the age of 71 on Monday, December 12.
On December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the 14 women whose lives were taken during a mass shooting at École Polytechnique in Montreal. This year, our community faces this day with exceptionally heavy hearts following the tragic news of the murders of four Indigenous women: Rebecca Contois, Morgan Beatrice Harris, Marcedes Myran, and Buffalo Woman, as Indigenous grandmothers have named her.
UWinnipeg's Golden Key Chapter, an academic student group, has been awarded The Key Chapter Award for a seventh consecutive year, which is the longest streak for any Canadian university chapter.
Boxes are set up at the UWinnipeg Library, Security Office (1C33), and Student Services in the Rice Building for donations of new and unwrapped toys for children of all ages. Gifts are being accepted on campus until Friday, December 2.
There are many ways to honour Canada’s veterans on this day. Winnipeg’s largest public Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre at 10:40 a.m. Smaller ceremonies will be held at various locations throughout the city by branches of the Royal Canadian Legion.
