WINNIPEG, MB – UWinnipeg’s Collegiate Girls Basketball Team secures its #1 ranking of the season by taking the Manitoba Championship this past weekend in Brandon hosted by Neelin High School. UWinnipeg’s team defeated St Norbert Collegiate, the second ranked team, in the final game. UWinnipeg’s Collegiate Girls maintained their composure and took the game with a final score of 68-61.

“The girls played smart and were able to maintain great shooting and tough defense throughout the tournament, said JoAnne Wells, UWinnipeg Collegiate Girls Basketball team coach. “Our team worked extremely hard all season and has earned this championship. Everyone aimed for the same goal. I could not be more proud of what they have accomplished.”

This win comes as no surprise as the team had already won three AAAA tournaments. The UWinnipeg Collegiate girls went into the championships with an overall record 25 – 3 undefeated in league play and had won the Zone 12 championship.

Other awards for the team this past weekend include Player of the game for the championship given to Breanne Klump – Tournament MVP, Raven Boulanger who lead her team -Tournament All-Star, Kenesha Giles – and the HARV Award given to Deanna Taras.
