Deadly diseases course May 25-30 and two public lectures

 Summer Institute in Disease and Policy V1 offered – includes two free public lectures

WINNIPEG, MB – The 2014 Ebola epidemic was the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa and claiming more than 11,000 lives. While that outbreak made headlines around the world, other diseases are also affecting tens of thousands of people and require relevant policy planning and responses.

The University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Science (in collaboration with the University of Manitoba and other Institutions) offers an intensive course open to both students and the practicing professional from May 25 to May 30 entitled: Disease, Ill-health, and Healing: Combating Global Health Inequities.

In conjunction, two evening lectures are open and free to the public:

MONDAY, MAY 25, 2015

HIV/AIDS, Ebola, other diseases, Indigenous and Circumpolar Health, Inequity and Policy.

Dr. Kue Young – topic: “Health Disparities: A Circumpolar Perspective and Some Theoretical Issues.”

Dr. Kue Young is Professor and Dean, School of Public Health, University of Alberta, Edmonton. He is also currently Professor, Dept. of Public Health Sciences, U. of Toronto, as well as TransCanada Chair in Aboriginal Health, U. of Toronto. Dr. Young is a 2009 Fellow, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences; and a 2010 Member, Order of Canada.

Dr. Keith Fowke,-  topic- “Preventing HIV Infections with a New Approach: Inducing Immune Quiescence.”

Dr. Fowke is Professor and Head, Dept. of Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, Health Sciences Centre, University of Manitoba. He is also Professor, Dept. of Community Health Sciences, UofM . His Lab. of Viral Immunology is a vital, active lab focused on training scientists at the M.Sc., Ph.D., or postdoctoral levels through basic studies in the immunobiology of HIV infection
