(Re)Visiting the Collection exhibit highlights UWinnipeg’s art treasures

Organized in honour of The University of Winnipeg’s 40th Anniversary, (Re)Visiting the Collection: Selections of Manitoba Art from The University of Winnipeg represents only the second time in more than 20 years that a survey of important works from the University’s fine art collection has been presented in Gallery 1C03. (Re)Visiting the Collection features 40 artworks in various media by 25 of Manitoba’s best-known artists, created over the last century. Artists include Jackson Beardy, Wanda Koop, Walter J. Phillips, Tony Tascona and more.

To accompany this exhibition, Gallery 1C03 will host a series of public talks that trace the development of The University of Winnipeg’s fine art collection and its campus art gallery. On Fri., Feb. 8 at 12:30 p.m. “Recollections – Gallery 1C03 and the Permanent Collection, 1986-2001” will be delivered by former University art curator and current Vice-President Academic of the Ontario College of Art and Design Dr. Sarah McKinnon. Art historian Patricia E. Bovey, the University’s first art curator, will present a paper on “The Beginnings of the U of W Collection: Artists’ Commitment and Ongoing Support” on Mon., Feb. 11 at 12:30 p.m.

Thanks to a partnership between Gallery 1C03 and the Manitoba Arts Network, (Re)Visiting the Collection will be shown at several exhibition centres in rural and northern Manitoba subsequent to its presentation in Winnipeg at Gallery 1C03. Beginning a year-long tour in May 2008, (Re)Visiting the Collection will travel to Thompson, Leaf Rapids, The Pas, Virden, Carmen, Holland and Portage la Prairie. The University of Winnipeg is pleased to be able to share some of our province’s finest artistic heritage with people across Manitoba.

On Mar. 20, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Gallery 1C03 will host a closing reception for (Re)Visiting the Collection when we will launch an illustrated publication related to the exhibit. The exhibition catalogue will include an introduction by exhibition curator Jennifer Gibson and interpretive essays by former University of Winnipeg art curators Patricia E. Bovey and Dr. Sarah McKinnon.
