Gary Kinsman Lectures – Feb. 7

Dr. Gary Kinsman of Laurentian University’s Department of Sociology will be giving two presentations at The University of Winnipeg this week.

Queering Nations: National Security as Sexual Regulation is on Thurs., Feb. 7, 2008 at 6:30 pm in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall and a free-period discussion: Queer Talk and Memory: the Social Organization of Forgetting and the Resistance of Remembering is on Fri., Feb. 8, 2008 at 12:30-1:30 pm in the C-FIR Boardroom (4CM41). EVERYONE is WELCOME. Both events are wheelchair accessible.

Kinsman is a Canadian sociologist and a leading academic on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues. He is a professor of sociology at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON. Kinsman’s research and publication focuses primarily on the sociological perspectives of LGBT issues. Kinsman is also a social activist on feminist, labor union, social justice and anti-poverty issues. Kinsman was a writer for The Body Politic and a central figure in the publication of the successor magazine Rites. He helped found Gays and Lesbians Against the Right Everywhere and the Lesbian and Gay Pride Day Committee of Toronto.

Kinsman’s talks will be of interest to students and faculty studying/teaching in the areas of Canadian history, politics, law, border and security issues, conflict resolution, anti-global/capitalist organizing, queer cultures and identities, gender and sexuality studies, community activism, and more.
