Grades Improve for Campus Food Services

Survey conducted this past fall shows more satisfied campus diners

WINNIPEG, MB – According to the most recent food services survey at The University of Winnipeg, there are more satisfied diners. This survey was conducted in October 2007 on behalf of UWinnipeg’s Student Services.

Survey scores in almost every category improved over the previous survey in March 2007. The biggest increases were in “variety of new menu items” (76%, +12.5), “promotions” (86%, +13.6) and “overall satisfaction” (85%, +10.1).

“We are especially proud of this overall satisfaction rating,” said Lynn Jones, Director of Housing and Student Life. “Our overall goal is to achieve a 90% rating and we continue to strive and improve to help achieve this goal.”

Jones points to bi-weekly international buffets, daily specials, fresh-baked cookies and specialty breads as a few of the many popular new offerings.

Other survey categories showed slight increases, including “customer service” (87.7%, +2.5), “quality of food” (72.6%, +3.4) and “cleanliness of facility” (89.2%, +4.0).

“A change introduced as a result of feedback from the survey in March 2007 is we added another staff member in Riddell Cafeteria to keep the tables in the seating area clean during the peak daytime hours,” explains Jones. “We’ve had numerous positive comments from customers as well as a slight boost in the fall survey ‘grade’ in cleanliness because of it.”

Changes in hours and venues have been implemented. Lockhart Café is now open until 7:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday (the same hours as Riddell Cafeteria). On Saturdays, Lockhart is now the only food venue open, while Riddell is closed.

The survey, administered twice a year, in spring and fall, is an opportunity for students, staff and faculty to provide feedback and suggestions on the food services on campus. The October 2007 survey garnered 179 respondents (down from the previous survey’s 203 respondents). The next survey will be conducted during the last week of February 2008.
