Robert Shawcross
Retired military man Robert Shawcross has decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in History at UWinnipeg.
“I decided on The University of Winnipeg because I find it is very accessible, and very open and welcoming,” said Shawcross. “They have a very wonderful program for mature students like myself and I took advantage of the opportunity to register as a mature student.”
Shawcross was enticed in attaining a degree after enjoying his 55 Plus courses at the University of Winnipeg’s Division of Continuing Education.
“I started taking 55 Plus programs a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much and felt that I wanted to learn more.” explained Shawcross enthusiastically. “Pursuing a higher education is something I didn’t have the opportunity to do in my early working years. I love to read and I am particularly interested in history and the world around us.”
Shawcross also took the Introduction to University course at DCE this past summer.
“I strongly recommend the Introduction to University course offered by DCE,” said Shawcross. “It really gives you a good idea on what it’s like in university. The course is structured just like a university term and gives you the tools you need to succeed. There are assignments, research papers, thesis statements, critical analysis papers and an oral presentation.”
As a first time university student, Shawcross is looking forward to his education but he understands the challenges that face him and every other student.
“My biggest challenge will be to remember and use the techniques that I learned over the summer. Proper study habits and time management is very important.”
